This is kinda maybe related, but your piece made me think of it so I’m sharing anyway. Been working with my 10yo on her writing and how AI might fit in. What’s interesting to me is most writing education for kids is very focused on sounding like someone else and that seems so counterproductive. We’ve set rule that she can use AI to help research facts for her stories (she’s mostly writing fiction) but I want her focused on figuring out how she likes to write and what she uniquely sounds like. My general theory with this stuff is AI is just a mirror on society and much of the pushback is actually much more deeply rooted in failures of education and prioritization.

Thank you so much for reading and sharing! I think you're correct to say that AI has laid bare some of the failings that we were papering over in terms of things like education. I remember prompts being a very helpful tool to shape my voice when I was learning to write about that age. The teacher would give us a topic or a format (personal essay, poem, etc) and then we were free to write within that. Bravo to her for writing fiction as well, it requires so much creativity!

as you can probably guess, i was strongly nodding through this whole thing. someone recently told me that human irrationality is a feature, not a bug… and i think that the lens of enjoyment and your anti-vibes list really brings needed layers to that 'irrationality.'

p.s. i absolutely love your coinage of tradwriting!

Glad this came up on my feed before any AI slop. Made my morning. Thank you for your tradwriting!

I resonate with what you said about trusting what your emotions say and basically using that as a guide to really decipher how you feel about things. So much of what we are told is the exact opposite of that so knowing that there are still fellow writers who marinate in their emotions to drive their diction is encouraging.

Thank you for reading! Aside from writing, I feel as if one key to making good decisions for yourself in life is to understand how you really feel about things and how the world wants you to feel. But it's always a struggle...
